I am of the opinion that we as human beings, for all our art and technology and humanitarian efforts, aren't any better than we ever have been, not counting the time before the fall of Adam and Eve.
How can you say that, you may be thinking? In this great country (America, in case you haven't noticed), people are given more civil rights than ever. We don't lynch blacks and people we hate. We have obviously made much progress in our treatment of other human beings.
Well, yes, some progress has been made. It's true that slavery is illegal now, as is segregation. But what do we have now? Now we have abortions on demand, euthanasia is practically legalized, and the entire country is polarized on most issues. All we did was transfer our hatred of one group of human beings to another. We hate the members of the other political party, ripping them apart at every available opportunity. We hear of people protesting for peace and going well beyond ordinary means of getting attention to doing things that are outright wrong; damaging private property being the most common. (Note that I didn't say "outright illegal", because I also don't believe that just because something is illegal, it is wrong. Or that because something is legal, it is right, for that matter.)
I'm trying to make two points here, actually. One is that the fundamental qualities of human nature never change. The other is that we really need to stop hating each other. I mean, how much better would the world be if we actually put into practice the belief that Christians have of each person being made in the image and likeness of God?
